RAISING CONFIDENT & WELL-ROUNDED CHILDREN - Helpful Tips for Parents of School-Age Children

As parents, we want the best for our children. After all, they mean the world to us. We want to raise confident, successful, independent, compassionate, and conscientious members of society. But… Are we unintentionally teaching our children arrogance thinking that we are cultivating self-esteem and self-confidence?

In this workshop, Dr. Yanina shares the Do’s and Don'ts of raising confident children without promoting entitlement or arrogance. Attendees will also learn effective strategies to help their children develop self-confidence, foster responsibility, thrive, and avoid the “I deserve it all” mentality. Participants will be able to immediately start implementing what they learn and thus raise their children more positively and intentionally. Short small group exercises take place throughout this workshop to provide an opportunity for the audience to share their experiences, discuss what they’re learning, and identify areas in need of improvement.

THE DANGERS OF SIBLING COMPARISONS: WHY I SHOULD NEVER COMPARE MY CHILDREN

We love talking about our children with others! Sometimes, as we share their stories, we end up comparing our children. We start comparing the moment our second child is born. As much as we try to avoid it, we just do it. Sometimes we do it intentionally, other times we don’t even realize it.

The problem is, if we are not careful, we may be hurting our children in a devastating and dangerous way. We might not realize it, but when we compare our children, we’re sending negative messages that they end up internalizing. The consequences may be affecting them today and can last a lifetime.

In this 90-minute workshop, Dr. Yanina shares two of the many dangers that arise when we compare our children. She also discusses the devastating implications of these dangers and shares practical suggestions that lead to improvements in this area. Short small group exercises take place throughout this workshop to provide an opportunity for the audience to share their experiences, discuss what they’re learning, and identify areas in need of improvement.

HOW YOU CAN STAY CONNECTED WITH YOUR TWEEN/TEEN AT A DEEPER LEVEL

This workshop is designed for parents feeling the relationship with their children is changing now that they’re becoming tweens or teens. Perhaps, their child is pulling away from them and becoming more distant but, they aren't sure what to do to improve the relationship. Parents are noticing unpleasant changes in their child’s behavior and consequently, there’s tension between them. They want to get closer to their tween or teen once again to regain their trust, yet they don’t know how to go about it.

In this 90-minute workshop, Dr. Yanina provides innovative ideas to help parents get a whole new perspective on how they can start reconnecting with their pre-teens or teen again. She also helps parents go from feeling frustrated about the relationship with their child to improving or mending it in a healthier way. It is also helpful for parents wanting to maintain a healthy relationship with their children for years to come.

SIX STEPS TO PUT THE BRAKES ON YOUR TWEEN/TEEN'S BACKTALK

Our children face many changes and challenges as they transition from childhood into adolescence. Some are normal, while others can be harmful if we don't take the time to correct them. One of the problems they face is the deep desire for independence and control. Some preteens and teenagers want to have the last word and have full control of their lives, whether or not we agree with them. As a result, they may raise their voices, respond aggressively or become disrespectful when things don’t go their way. Of course, as parents, we don’t want our children to behave this way.

In this 90-minute workshop, Dr. Yanina answers the question: How should I react when my tween or teen talks to me rudely and disrespectfully? She shares tips to help you handle disrespectful comments and your children's attitudes more effectively. She also shares strategies to help you deescalate this behavior so that you can have a conversation with your child that leads to a change in attitude. Finally, Dr. Yanina talks about tendencies that we, as parents, might be showing that could be giving your child permission to behave disrespectfully. Short small group exercises take place throughout this workshop to provide an opportunity for the audience to share their experiences, discuss what they’re learning, and identify areas in need of improvement.

TEACHING, EMPOWERING, AND PREPARING MY TWEEN/TEEN TO SUCCEED

More than ever, tweens and teens have easy access to unlimited information with a touch of a button. With hundreds of social media platforms, unlimited easy access to inappropriate content, false and conflicting messages from the media, and peer pressure, these youngsters are in desperate need of sound direction and support from their parents.

In this 90-minute workshop, Dr. Yanina shares with the attendees strategies to help their youngsters navigate and succeed in this challenging developmental stage despite the noises that compete for their attention. She focuses on healthy discipline, helping your child overcome emotional roller coasters, helping your child filter external influences and pressures, and teaching and putting into practice values, responsibility, and independence. Dr. Yanina concludes her talk by sharing with the audience a few tips to help them prioritize and invest in their wellness. Short small group exercises take place throughout this workshop to provide an opportunity for the audience to share their experiences, discuss what they’re learning, and identify areas in need of improvement.

FINDING HARMONY BETWEEN MOTHERHOOD, CAREER, LIFE, AND MYSELF

I want to dedicate more time to my family but I also have a career that requires my time and energy. Between keeping up with the busy schedule at work, running my kids from school to all their after-school activities, making sure the house doesn’t fall apart and other commitments, I just don’t have enough hours in a day to do this. Let alone, time for myself. I'm feeling very overwhelmed and stressed.”

We are so passionate about the well-being of our children that, perhaps somewhere along the way, we're losing ourselves. When we feel overwhelmed, stressed and tense, we are not ourselves. We are less patient and tolerant, and more cranky and irritable. As a result, we might not be in the right state of mind to make the best decisions for our family. On the other hand, if our state of mind is healthy and we can find harmony among our many responsibilities, we can face challenges more objectively, influence positively, and make a greater impact on the lives of our families.

In this 90-minute workshop, Dr. Yanina presents to the audience a more realistic approach to what ‘balance' looks like in a healthy lifestyle. She shares five strategies moms can use to help them define their personal balance and feel more confident and less guilty. The audience will also learn ways to meet the needs of their family and career without losing themselves along the way. Short small group exercises take place throughout this workshop to provide an opportunity for the audience to share their experiences, discuss what they’re learning, and identify areas in need of improvement. The workshop includes a voluntary relaxation exercise (e.g., guided meditation, breathing, or stretching exercise) to assist attendees to clear their minds and improve focus.

NAVIGATING PARENTING DURING UNCERTAIN TIMES IN A HEALTHIER WAY

Navigating uncertain times can be quite stressful and unsettling. As parents, not only do we have the responsibility to support and protect our families, but we are also responsible for ensuring that our children continue to receive education during these unprecedented times.

It can be quite intimidating to face circumstances that are out of our control. Are things going to work out for us? How can I help my child if I’m not a teacher! What if my child falls behind? It is no surprise that many parents are feeling frustrated, distressed, and confused. It is during these times that our faith, grit, and the way we cope with a crisis are tested. Although we may not feel it at times, crisis gives us the chance to build amazing qualities such as courage, strength, and hope that will help us recover from difficult circumstances. You can stay strong during uncertain times but it’s dependent upon your state of mind and the choices you make.

In this 90-minute workshop, Dr. Yanina provides practical ideas to help parents navigate uncertainty and support their children during these complex times so that they can experience greater outcomes. She also shares ideas that parents can do to help themselves maintain perspective and a healthier outlook during challenging times.

"My Moms in the Middle group was blessed to have Dr. Yanina speak to us about boosting our children’s self-confidence. The presentation focused on easy to implement tips to help your children achieve a healthy self-confidence. The tips included ways to help children understand their emotions and potential, meaningful communication, and putting forth effort over perfection.

Dr. Yanina was relatable and engaging during the presentation and when answering questions. This presentation helped me to gain insights into how to create a positive relationship with my children and how to support them to be kind, well-rounded, and responsible."

Lisa Anczer, leader for MomsNation @ Faith Church Beecher

“Dr. Yanina was a great inspiration to our 'moms in the middle' of parenting teens and tweens! So often we just push through our days trying to avoid the conflict. She reminded us of the importance of really connecting with our kids and gave us some great practical tips on how to do so!

Plus she advised us on taking care of ourselves in the process, something we moms regularly put on the back burner. She was engaging and funny, a real treat!"

"Dr. Gomez is truly making a difference in the lives of our parents in Hammond. As a district we have enacted a Social- Emotional curriculum for students to learn coping skills as well as how to regulate their emotions. One of the components that was missing, was the parent support. Dr. Gomez was our answer to fulfill this missing piece. She shares practical and relevant skills with our parents to enhance their relationships with their children. Our parent group finds her talks enlightening and extremely relatable.

Many of our parents have limited access to resources or people who can share their expertise in the area of child development. Dr. Gomez shares her ideas and “hacks” in a very non- threatening and non-judgmental way that makes our parent group feel validated."

Anthony Salinas, Executive Director Elementary @ School City of Hammond

"Dr. Yanina Gomez partnered with our church to host a workshop on parenting and navigating e-learning in the midst of a global pandemic. Dr. Gomez was the perfect person for this topic. From the first call in which we discussed what we were looking for from the workshop to the actual presentation itself, she partnered with our organization beautifully to deliver incredible content. The workshop was amazing!

Dr. Gomez is not just well organized and prepared. She is personal, relatable, and parents respond so well to her. She meets people where they are, gives them full permission to process their feelings, and gives them helpful next steps to move forward into health. This workshop was such a gift to the families of our church, and working with Dr. Gomez to make it possible was an amazing decision for our ministry."

Courtney Kalous, Associate Director of Kids @ Soul City Church

"Dr. Gomez’s presentation content perfectly addressed our parents' concerns and her delivery of the material was genuine and warm hearted. They (parents) were engaged and will hopefully encourage other parents to attend your next session.

The ELL teachers have spent years searching for someone to provide these sessions to our parents. Looks like we found the perfect one! Thank you so much!"

Mrs. Soto, ELL Teacher at Crete-Monee School District 201-U

"The Language Development Program in School City of Hammond is proud to offer Dr. Yanina Gomez’s Mindful Parenting Talks in Spanish. These monthly workshops empower our K-12 parents in meaningful ways that meet their social and emotional needs.  At times we are so focused on meeting the students’ needs that we forget about equipping their parents’ needs.  This is a missing and important component.  The feedback from the parents has been extremely positive.

Parents have noted they find the topics to be relevant; they are learning to better support their children in ways that are different from the ways they were raised; and they are now more understanding to their children than ever before.  The Mindful Parenting Talks are exactly what our parents need during this uncertain time."

Ana Verduzco, Language Development Program Director, School City of Hammond

“I read the description of this workshop and I felt like it was a gift that fell into my lap at exactly the right time. My 7th grader is going through something and his dad and I need help. That’s why I showed up with pen and paper for her session this morning.” I felt so fortunate that a parent shared those thoughts with me during the small group section of a recent Dr. Yanina Mindful Parenting workshop.

Our school district contracted five Mindful Parenting sessions with Dr. Yanina. After these sessions, our parents and staff alike are walking away feeling inspired by her teachings and motivated to implement her suggestions. Dr. Yanina’s charismatic demeanor and ability to put people at ease make it a pleasure to work with her. As our school district’s Family Engagement Coordinator, it’s my responsibility to seek out speakers for our community and I’m so glad that Dr. Yanina and I have crossed paths.

Becky Parkes, Family Engagement Coordinator, School City of Hammond

“Dr. Yanina Gomez’s presentations are fun, engaging, and thought-provoking. Her ability to communicate in Spanish and English allows her to connect to a variety of audiences. The topics covered are so important and she gives applicable strategies for parents to use in order to form stronger connections and relationships with their children, while also tackling difficult situations. Her enthusiasm is contagious and everyone who attends walks away feeling empowered and motivated. I would highly recommend Dr. Gomez to present to your families and communities!”
